Bathroom Remodeling Tips and Ideas

Creating a Fresh New Bathroom
If your bathroom is more of an eye sore than the sanctuary you deserve, you’re not alone. Bathrooms have replaced kitchens as the most remodeled room in the home—their smaller footprint and lack of pricey appliances make for a less expensive project. But baths are still a challenge. Tricky layouts and water everywhere can test your design saavy. Plus mistakes are hard and expensive to fix.. So you'll want to approach your remodel methodically and with great care.

Out with the Old!
First things first, make a list of what's not working for you. Just grab a pen and make a list of all the things that really could use an upgrade. Maybe that pink bathtub and sink were the rage in the 1970's but now it just looks like your home is stuck in a time warp.

Make a list and check it twice.
Take time to assess your needs. What drives you crazy about your bathroom now? Think about the layout and functionality. Is the space working with you or against? Are you trying to squeeze past your partner in the morning? Do things work as they should?

Questions to Ask Yourself When Planning a Bathroom Layout

Here are some important pointers to help you determine the best way to lay out your new or newly remodeled bathroom.

Who will use the bathroom?

For example, are there two adults trying to get ready during the morning rush hour? Is the bathroom limited to just an occasional guest or two? Will this be a children's bathroom? What about accessibility for older folks?

How will it be used?

What activities will be done in the various parts of the room? For example, do you need to sit and apply makeup? What activities can be done in a shared space, and which require privacy? Would you like a tub that accommodates more than one person?

Where will things go?

What items need to be stored in the bathroom, and where should they be located for easy access? The answers to these questions can shed light on how much open floor space is needed for navigation around the room, what size tub or shower makes sense, whether two sinks are necessary, and more.

When creating the perfect bathroom layout, don't underestimate the value of storage. IIf you don't have a place to store things they'll end up cluttering your counter tops.

Think about beautiful bathrooms you may have seen in hotels or design magazines. What's the difference between those professionally designed spaces compared to what you have now?

Usually good design just flows well, and everything fits together perfectly. Here are some ideas:

  1. Streamline the room, don't leave things jutting out.
  2. Create a sense of openess
  3. Extend space with clear shower doors
  4. Use a soothing color palette
  5. Integrated lighting is a sophisticated way to brighten the space and add drama. Thanks to LED technology there are a lot of creative ways to light a room that just weren't available a few years ago.
  6. No need for a jumble of electrical charging cords. Outlets placed inside cabinets can make unsightly cords a thing of the past.

What's your big picture goals for the renovation?

1. Rank your priorities with the bathroom.
2. Set your overall budget.
3. Make a deadline for when the bathroom must be finished.

Good, better and best. Getting the most for your money.

Like everyone you want the best value for your hard earned money. So you'll want to do it once and do it right. Before you start ordering materials, be sure to consider your budget and what range you want to stay in. One of the secrets for top bathroom designers is that because bathrooms are usually smaller spaces, splurging on a few higher-end materials and finishes can be a good investment that can make your space seem incredibly luxurious. The size of your bathroom, the quality of materials you want to include and whether you’re planning to do some of the labor yourself all can affect the cost of a remodel.

A good rule of thumb is to set aside 20% for unexpected surprises. This is especially prudent with older homes which may have some unseen issues with electrical wiring or plumbing not being up to current code.

Give Yourself Plenty of Planning Time
You'll what to make sure you are absolutely happy with your design choices before buying materials and proceeding with construction. Bathroom design pros recommend allowing yourself at least one month to two months for your planning and research stage.

Planning a layout and being confident in your choices is the smart way to proceed. Changing up the design plan in the middle of remodeling, will cause frustration for your family, unnecessary delays and unfortunately may make your renovation project more expensive than you planned. Make certain the space and layout works well for you and all the others that will be making use of the bathroom. Also of course the bathroom is going to be out of commission for awhile during construction. Make certain your second bathroom will accomodate everyone during the interim period.

.

Lighting
The bathroom, just as any other room in the home, should have a comfortable, welcoming character all its own. Lighting in a bathroom is a just as important as the other features, as it affects mood, and overall satisfaction with using the space.

Three Kinds of Bathroom Lighting
Plan for layers of light, including ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting can be achieved through recessed lights in the center of the ceiling, even under counter LED strips, Today's LED's are warm colored and can also be dimmed for mood. Task lighting means putting lights near where you are going to be doing a specific thing, for example taking care of morning grooming. One tip on these lights is to make sure they complement without overpowering. No one wants to look into blaring spotlights every morning. When you are buying lighting fixtures for this area, take into account your mirror and vanity and their size in relation to the light you are considering. Too big or too small could be an issue.

Accent lighting is in between ambient and task lighting in brightness, It's used to help feature special architectural features, or even spotlight artwork. The vanity, tub area and shower all require different lighting choices, but the bathroom's overall design still needs to cohesive. Backlit mirrors and medicine cabinets are an exceptional choice for modern bathroom design

Older people will need to be particularly careful with lighting, because as we age it can just be more difficult to see. Falls in the bathroom for seniors can be devastating, so be mindful of safety for yourself and older folks will be living or using that space.

You'll want to light the shower space so everything is clear, recessed lighting is particularly handy in that area

  • Produce a safe lighting layout
  • Make sure light is equally distributed
  • Avoid accidental shadows or bright spots
  • Work with true or warm light colors
  • All of these goals are possible without industrial fluorescents and glaring, reflective surfaces.

Measure Twice & Cut Once.
As the old builder adage goes "Measure Twice & Cut Once". Measuring your bathroom for a remodel is arguably the most essential first step in the process. After all, you don’t know what you can do with the space until you know exactly what you’re working with. Measuring includes the existing space and deciding on exactly what you want in your new space and how you are going to fit your upgraded fixtures and features into your existing floor plan. Measuring has to be precise. No need to worry on this point. Integrity Kitchen and Baths will come and measure your bathroom for you. You'll note we double check and even triple check measurements for accuracy. This is done so everything fits perfectly into the space.

Small Bathroom Design Tricks
Got a small bathroom? Certain design ideas will help the room seem more spacious. Stay with light colors for the sinks, toilet, and tile. Choose finishes and surfaces for the bathroom that are reflective of the light. Frame-less mirrored walls make for a more spacious feeling. Walk in showers or clear glass shower doors that move side to side (rather than opening out into the space) are optimal. Mounting a towel bar on the glass will help keep towels handy with a minimum of fuss. Insets in the shower will come in quite handy for storage. Back-lighting the mirror will give you more light to work with. Floating vanities are handy for small bathrooms and also are easier to clean under.
